The city of Las Vegas is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Locksmith I. This position performs a variety of technically skilled and difficult locksmith maintenance tasks; and performs a variety of technical tasks related to area of assignment.

Type of Examination
A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas.
The test for this recruitment will be a multiple-choice written examination which will test the applicant's knowledge of

  1. Basic principles and procedures of the locksmith trade.
  2. Techniques of installation, maintenance and repair of a variety of locking systems.
  3. Wiring schematics and electronic locking devices and systems.
  4. Tools and materials currently used in the locksmith trade.


The city does not recommend or endorse any particular study guide for this test.
Written Exam Dates: 5/5/25 and 5/8/25
Additional Background Process
Any position with the Department of Public Safety requires the following additional screening: (1) background investigation, (2) polygraph, and (3) psychological suitability assessment. Sensitive and/or confidential aspects of your personal life will be explored during this this phase of the process.
Selection Process
Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview with skills assessment. Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, education and experience verification, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Supervision Received

Receives general supervision from higher level Detention & Enforcement staff.

Essential Functions:

  1. Installs, adjusts and repairs commercial and residential locksets on doors, safes, furniture and file cabinets.
  2. Issues, maintains, and tracks access to keys and card access keys; maintains and updates paper and electronic records of key access within various city computer tracking systems; participates in maintaining the city-wide electronic and computerized door access system.
  3. Maintains high security institutional locking devices, including cell block doors, electric locks and strikes.
  4. Installs, repairs and replaces automotive locking devices.
  5. Picks locks; drills out and replaces damaged locks in the field and in the lock shop; maintains a master keys lock system.
  6. Cuts keys by hand and machine; issues keys.
  7. Installs, adjusts and maintains various types of exposed and concealed door closing devices.
  8. Fabricates replacements for damaged or broken parts.
  9. Estimates time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisitions materials as required.
  10. Coordinates the electronic access card program, including issuing and setting up and removing individual access cards, and entering access information into systems; acts as a liaison between the city and outside vendors responsible for electronic access systems.
  11. Assists with maintaining a sufficient supply of materials so work will not be unreasonably delayed; assists in maintaining the security of high-value tools, materials and equipment.
  12. Reads and interprets floor plans, sketches, drawings and blueprints. Recommends specific hardware for new and existing projects; orders supplies, materials and equipment as required.
  13. Enters essential data into designated databases, maintains appropriate reports, and coordinates work orders.


Marginal Functions:

  2. Coordinates and assists in transporting safes.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Experience:

Two years of increasingly responsible locksmith experience.

Training:

Equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by additional specialized training in locksmithing.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Special Requirement

May be required to be on-call and respond, if necessary.

COMPENSATION

Annual Base Pay Increases

  • Negotiated as part of the collective bargaining process.
  • Step (Merit) Increase - typically awarded on the anniversary date of hire, up to range maximum.

Retirement

  • Benefit eligible employees participate in the Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada (PERS). PERS, a statewide defined benefit plan, calculates retirement benefits based on 2.25 percent (current percentage for employees hired 7/1/15 and after) for each year of service, applied to the employee's highest consecutive 36-month average salary. PERS also requires that employees share 50 percent of the PERS contribution, which is implemented by reducing the City's salary ranges. The highest consecutive 36-month average salary is increased commensurate with the salary range reductions required by PERS.


Deferred Compensation

  • The city offers a 457(b) Plan which is a government deferred compensation plan similar to a 401(k) plan. It offers both pre-tax and after-tax savings and investment options.



Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance

  • Employees are covered the first of the month following date of employment. Five medical plans, two dental and two vision plans are available. City pays 100% of employee premium + 50% of dependent premium.



Life and AD&D Insurance

  • City provides $20,000 policies at no cost.
  • Additional voluntary life insurance and AD&D insurance available for purchase.



Disability Insurance

  • City provides a long term disability policy:
    • LTD: Employees who normally work at least 30 hours/week are eligible. Benefits begin after 90 days of disability. Payment is up to 60% of earnings, up to $11,000/month, and may not be supplemented with sick or vacation.
